What Are Dental Fillings?
Fillings are an easy early-stage treatment to resolve tooth decay which allows you to keep most of the natural structure of your tooth. It is the preferable solution to tooth damage as it will not only save your tooth but also save you from needing more expensive treatments like a root canal, crown or extraction in the future.
How Do I Know That I Need A filling?
Often you will know if you need a filling due to pain or increased sensitivity in a particular area. As soon as you suspect this might be the case, we recommend making an examination appointment.
Some of the things you might also experience are:
- sharp or rough tooth that cuts your tongue
- visible holes or breakage in your tooth
- getting food stuck in a particular spot
- floss that keeps fraying
It is important to bear in mind that you will not always experience signs of decay. Regular check-ups are the best way to prevent extensive damage.
What Can I Expect At My Appointment?
Our experienced dental care team use numbing gel and a local anaesthetic injection to eliminate any pain or discomfort whilst you are having your filling. The procedure involves preparing the tooth by removing any decay. After the filling has been placed in the tooth, it is then polished. An appointment for a filling takes between 30to 60 minutes, depending upon how large and how many fillings you require. Although you may experience some sensitivity after your appointment, it will quickly diminish and you will be immediately able to return to your regular activities including eating or drinking.

The Types Of Dental Fillings We Offer
There are a variety of different materials that can be used to fill teeth. The type of material used to fill a tooth will be dependent on your circumstances however, at Albion Dental Care, composite resin is our most used filling material. If you have any questions about the materials, we use please feel free to discuss this with your dental care team either over the phone or during your appointment.
Composite resin
Composite resin is a tooth-coloured, plastic-based filling material that is chemically glued to the tooth. Using composite resin fillings bonded to the tooth structure requires less tooth preparation/removal and so is better for the tooth.
GIC (Glass Ionomer Cement)
GIC is a tooth-coloured material that has decay preventing properties however it is not as strong as composite resin. It does however form a good base layer for temporary fillings and filling baby teeth.
Amalgam
Amalgam is a strong and durable blend of different metals that can last for decades however it requires more tooth removal and is a dark silver colour.
